An amazing scale model, perfectly fitting parts and absolutely no filler required. I made an airfield base out of MDF and am hoping to complete this diorama with a refuelling truck.
Hello
I have finally received the tamiya P-47! The fuselage has very nice details on it and I have decided to use the Eduard photo-etch and mask kits. The cockpit fits very well into the fuselage and there seems to be no gaps.
unfortunately, the kit comes with instructions for only one colour scheme
Very detailed cockpit
Pre-shading with flat black
Then a coat of interior green. The pre-shading seems to be working well
All of the parts laid out. I have not finished painting the side wall instruments yet.
Dry fitting into the fuselage, fits perfectly.
So far, the build is going very well. All parts fit together perfectly and there are some very nice details. In order for me to build the motor I need some alclad paints so I will order them and while they ship I will probably start building the numerous underslung attachments such as bombs and drop-tanks.
Final assembly of cockpit
Interior of fuselage
The two fuselage halves glued together
A barely noticeable gap appeared on the bottom that required some filler
Tail wings attached
I decided to open the cooling flap
Started working on the engine but I need alclad aluminium paints to finish it
So far going well, assembled and glued on the wings. They were a bit hard to get into the right position but in the end it worked.
The wings consisted of several parts that fit together perfectly
The Eduard masks worked perfectly
The masks were pre-cut so it did not take too long to apply them
I decided to put the flaps in the up position
To get the interior colour of the cockpit, I painted the clear parts interior green
Next, a coat of OD green mixed with some tan
Finished painting some parts red and pre-shaded the underside of the fuselage and wings so that I can apply tamiya XF-19 sky grey later on.
I also airbrushed Aqua gloss on the dark green top, and for some reason it turned from a very smooth surface to a rough one. Why is this happening? Isn’t a gloss coat meant to even and smoothen things out?
Not much pre-shading needed
At first I tried to airbrush red directly onto the green but the green would show through so I painted it white and then red and it worked
I finally got some alclad aluminium paint but it says I need a special airbrush cleaner. Would a normal cleaner work?
I finished the engine and masked off the red tail today. The engine was very easy to assemble, was made of only three parts and it had some great details.
Took forever to mask because of the two little protruding rudder holders that had to be painted olive drab
I painted the pistons titan silver and the gearbox metallic grey
After the paint, I airbrushed a clear gloss coat and added a dark brown wash
Unfortunately, most of the engine detail will not be visible once the cowling is put into place.
Finished the front part of the aircraft and glued it on. It fit perfectly and no filler was needed. I then pained it all olive drab.
I decided to put the cowlings in the closed position
No gaps
Painted with a coat of olive drab
I got myself some alclad thinner so I used alclad dull aluminium to paint the wheel hubs and the land gear supports. I also painted the underside in light grey.
masked off and ready to be painted light grey
The landing gear turned out nicely I think
First coat of light grey
Test fitting the landing gears
Finished paining the underside in grey but when I removed the masking tape, I found that there were stripes left from it so I painted over with a thin coat of olive drab.
I decided to paint the wheel wells with a brush rather than an airbrush.
Some touching up needed on the gloss red
I assembled the landing gears and started work on the bombs, drop tanks and bazookas. Hope to start applying decals soon and can’t wait to remove the canopy masks and see how the interior detail looks.
I tried coating the propeller in tamiya flat coat to protect the black paint, but it just messed it up so I re-painted it.
The large, flat drop tank in the middle.
The 8, 50-cal machine gun barrels. I painted them in alclad polished aluminium.
Finally got back to working on this model after a break. I painted the wheel wells and finished the bazookas. I also did some weathering, maybe too much? Can anyone recommend a good airbrushable clear coat on which I can apply the decals?
The bombs, Bazookas and weathering
The well wells were quite simple and everything fit together perfectly
Hello,
It has been a long time since I last posted, this is because the Humbrol clear coats that I was going to apply onto the model got lost while they were getting delivered. I’m trying to get some new ones but I think ill get a replacement only by next week. In the meantime, I decided that I was going to make a base for the P-47 out of a piece of MDF. I also finished the 1000lb bombs.
The bombs painted Tamiya Olive Drab and masked out, ready to get the yellow line airbrushed on
I think the line turned out quite nicely, without any major paint bleeds
The bombs in place
I have noticed a gap near the bomb pylon, I will try to fix that with some putty
Applied quite a thick coat of glossy wood varnish to the piece of MDF
After a bit of sanding the varnish, the finish was very smooth and glossy. I am going to paint the top in grey and the sides in white
I think this is a good size base for this plane, I am planning to make an airfield diorama on it
Ok, so I continued working on the base. Finished the spray painting part and hope to soon start adding more detail such as airfield items, airstrip plane guidance lines and I hope to incorporate the tamiya 1/2 ton refuelling truck into this diorama.
the grey top colour applied
and masked off…
Masking tape removed, the paint boundaries are quite neat.
I have finally received the humbrol clear coats, but, the flat clear coat did not arrive yet. After paining the entire model with the clear coat, I got concerned. Why did the clear coat that was meant to make the surface smoother create small bumps on it? The base seems to be coming along nicely, I painted a dotted guiding line on it, although I am not sure that I like the “oil/fuel stains” that I created by spilling diluted black paint on the grey.
To clean the airbrush, I used the thinner
The part behind the cockpit has got some rough surface that was not there previously. Does anyone know why?
Masking off so I can paint the yellow guiding line
What do you think of the oil/fuel stains and the weathering? I am planning to put small fuel barrels in those spots
Have not posted in a while but during this time, I finished the model. There are some major flaws such as missing decals because I was not being careful enough and ripped them but otherwise, everything went fine. After applying several clear coats, I started the decalling. The decals supplied were very good. Once the decals were put in place, I applied several layers of the humbrol matt coat and removed the canopy masks. Unfortunately, you can’t really see the interior of the cockpit. For the base, I added an area of grass and am planning to build a refuelling truck to complete this diorama.
Too much micro sol and fiddling around with decal while not being careful is a recipe for disaster.
I tried to add a wash, but it did not work.
decals applied, clear matt coat ready to be airbrushed.
Lear coat applied, masks removed, unfortunately you can’t see much detail
I used an old brush to “paint” PVA glue over the surface where I wanted grass, then I sprinkled an excess of grass powder. Once it was dry, the powder was shaken off.
Finished model on base
